Why we have linked the Water Scorpion with Wilmslow: Wilmslow is home to an internationally important habitat, peat bogs. Lindow Common has an area of peat bog which is renowned for its wealth of important flora and fauna species, and is also the place where the world famous Lindow Man was discovered in 1984 by commercial peat-cutters. The acid pools at Lindow Common are an ideal habitat for the water scorpion, which lives along the bottom of the pools, slowly hunting for passing prey and clinging on to water plants. They are not always easy to spot as they lay still when discovered, resembling a fallen leaf. In June 2008 an underground fire at Lindow Common continued for three days, destroying around 150,000 square feet of peat bog. The regeneration process will take a long time as it takes up to 100 years to create just one metre of peat. It is now vital to conserve the remaining peat bog habitat. In addition, the local swimming club is known as the Wilmslow Scorpions. Having been in contact with the secretary of the local swimming club, they named their swimming club the ‘scorpions’ purely to give themselves a ‘cool’ sounding name. |
