 Green Tiger Beetle

Why we have linked the Green Tiger Beetle with Stoke on Trent:

This green tiger beetle, as with all tiger beetles, has long legs in comparison to its body size and can run extremely fast. It can also make short, fast flights, buzzing loudly if it has been disturbed.

Park Hall Country Park, at Stoke, is an important site for the city. It is an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and an NNR (National Nature Reserve). The reserve is host to a wide variety of wildlife and one its star species is the green tiger beetle. England has five species of tiger beetle, with the green tiger beetle being our most common and widespread.

The sandstone canyons and heathland of the country park are well suited to the needs of the green tiger beetle. In recent years, the local council has recognised the importance of conservation of this species; work undertaken on site is done to promote the well-being and continued success of this beetle.
