Wild Animals
Saltwater Crustaceans
It is often noted that fish are the predominant species of the sea, but it is also true that the saltwater environment of the sea world has enabled the expanded evolutionary development of a whole range of animal groups, in particular worms, molluscs and also crustaceans. In comparison to the crustaceans of the sea, the crustaceans of land and freshwater are considered by many dull and often fail to inspire affection or wonder. We have a significant number of beautiful and wonderful ‘crusty’ creatures around our coasts like the various tough-looking crabs and lobsters with their colourful suits of armour and their odd ways of walking. We have prawns and shrimps of more delicate colours that seem to dance when they move and we have crustaceans, like barnacles, that would appear to have nothing in common with other marine crustaceans. In our website we have described 5 crabs, 2 lobsters, 1 shrimp, 1 prawn, the tiny copepods and, of course, the Acorn Barnacle and the Goose Barnacle.
