Many birds eat seeds and insects and some birds mainly like to eat fish, such as the Grey Heron with its long neck and long legs. The Black-headed, Common and Herring Gulls are often associated with eating fish because they mostly live near the sea, however some of them eat insects, worms, small mammals and the Common Gull even visits rubbish dumps to find food.

One of the most beautiful fish-eating birds found in our country is the Kingfisher. It is a striking electric-blue and orange bird that is quite shy and secretive. If you are lucky you may be able to spot one when it is perching for food over slow-flowing rivers and streams, but you have to be very quiet because if it is disturbed, it will fly very quickly under cover.

In our website we have written about the Black-headed Gull, Common Gull, Grey Heron and the Kingfisher to show you how they hunt for fish (as well as other food) and how different these birds are in character.
